The Art Of Experiential Living

When we look back on moments in life, we most often remember moments, things and people through how they made us feel. As humans, we are wired to remember emotions. True happiness is often found in priceless experiences. The happiness that is felt through an experience stays with us far longer than something materialistic.
So why should we let go those “things” for a while and invest in experiences instead?

1. Tangible products perish over time. Memories last forever.
You can buy that cute black dress or the new PlayStation/Xbox (whichever side you’re on) but after a point you will move on from it when something new comes out. Further, the value of these products diminishes over time. Memories, on the other hand, stay with you forever. Remember that great vacation you took or the special meal out on your father’s birthday?

2. Experiences Shape Us
Once we live an experience, it becomes a part of us through the lessons, emotions and memories. That is the beauty of something intangible. We enjoy the moment and take away lessons or memories that will serve us in the future.

3. We ALWAYS want MORE
There’s a never ending list, the thrill of a tangible product dies over time and often leaves us craving for more. Think about it - you bought the new iPhone and you’re exhilarated, but 2 years later, the phone is in a drawer at home, forgotten and collecting dust. Experiences stay with you for a lifetime. Like going on a getaway with your family or friends, a day of relaxation and pampering with your girls, a helicopter ride or a fun day of horse riding. You learn something new (a transformational experience) and you get quality time with yourself or a loved one, that definitely trumps everything!

4. Experiences bring you closer to people, thereby making you happier
An experience usually involves interaction with people. We tend to create new bonds and strengthen old bonds. This feeling of belonging to a community and of mutual growth fosters closeness. Every experience we encounter is unique in its own way. This uniqueness brings about feelings of anticipation and ensures that each moment is transformational thereby moulding us into fuller, happier people.

5. Giving Gifts Makes People Just As Happy As Receiving Gifts
Yes!!! Believe it or not- Science says it too! Experiences help foster creativity and gratitude. We all know receiving gifts makes us so very happy. But so does giving gifts! It enables the giver to experience a positive self-concept, to feel loved and valued.
